What is an SST Card
SST Card is an acronym that mean Site Safety Training Card. In the following sections we will explain what an SST Card is, who needs it, and how can you can earn one in NYC by completing the required safety training.
Because of Local Law 196 of 2017 required all worker within NYC to have an SST Card. This specifically applies to workers if they are performing construction or demolition work at any job site that requires a construction superintendent or a more advanced safety person. Specifically, we are referring to construction sites other than two or three family homes.
How to earn a Site Safety Training Card
Because work and certification experience differs, there are four ways you can qualify for your SST Card. As a result, there is no particular order for which safety training method applies to you.
Furthermore, any of these 4 methods allow you to apply for your Site Safety Training Card. Because qualifications can be a little confusing, we have a list of them below with explanations to make it easy for you to understand. Furthermore, to help make it even easier, this list contains links to sign up for the classes that you need to qualify..
SST Card Qualifications: Choose 1 of 4 options:
1. OSHA 30 Consruction plus 10 hours of additional SST training:
The most common way to apply for your SST Card (and the only method available at NYST) is 40 hours of safety training. More specifically, this method is a combination of obtaining your OSHA 30 Construction certification plus 10 hours of SST courses. Because of this, the 10 hours of Site Safety Training courses can be the 8 Hour Fall Prevention course plus the 2 Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness course.

2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness

2. OSHA 10 plus 30 hours of additional SST:
Another (rare) to earn your Site Safety Training Card is also 40 hours of training. Specifically, this method is a combination of your OSHA 10 Construction class plus 30 hours of specific SST classes. Because of this, the 30 hours of courses that you need are the 8 Hour Fall Prevention course, 8 Hour New York City Chapter 33 course, 4 Hour Supported Scaffold User course, 4 Hours of General Elective courses, 4 Hours of Specialized Elective courses, and the 2 Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness course.

3. 100-hour training program (such as an approved apprenticeship)
OR
4. “Prior Experience” (an option above, but if any training is more than 5 years old) plus 8 hours of additional Site Safety Training:
The fourth way is what is called “Prior Experience.” This simply means, if you meet the requirements of any of the other three methods, but some or all of your safety training is too old (more than 5 years old), then you don’t have to sit through all of those classes again. Instead, all you need to do is take 8 Hours of “Refresher” training. You need to take these refresher courses because they refresh any of your old training and allow you to qualify for your SST Card. Specifically, the refresher classes you need to take are the 4 Hour Fall Prevention course and the 4 Hour Hour Supported Scaffold User course.
4-Hour Fall Prevention
4-Hour Supported Scaffold User
Expiration: 5 years
Renewal: within a year preceding renewal, attend 8 hours of SST training:

What is a Supervisor SST Card
The Supervisor Site Safety Training Card (Supervisor SST Card) is also a requirement of Local Law 196. For this reason, any worker who is a Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, Construction Superintendent, Concrete Safety Manager, or Competent Person working at job sites within NYC where there is new construction or demolition you need the have a Supervisor SST Card.
Because of this new requirement, you are required to take 62 hours of safety trainings. For this reason, we wrote out the required courses and provided class sign up links HERE.
